STRATEGIC GIVING
Gifts That Create a Living Legacy
Private donations allow us to address gaps in government funding, test new ideas, and invest in the people and infrastructure that keep our mission going.
We are grateful for every dollar that is entrusted to us.
Tax-Advantaged Giving
IRA Charitable Contributions: If you are 71 or older, you can donate from your IRA, which has benefits for both you and nonprofits. Qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) up to $105,000 avoid being subject to federal income taxes. You should consult a tax advisor or other professional for additional information regarding your specific situation.
Stock Gifts: Donating stock directly to Lifting Up Westchester can increase the amount of money received by the charity while reducing the tax burden for the donor. When you donate appreciated securities (investments that have increased in value from the time they were purchased), some individuals and households may be able to take advantage of IRS tax provisions to claim a charitable tax deduction for the full, fair market value of the securities.
Structured Giving
Donor-Advised Funds: You can recommend a grant from your donor-advised fund by contacting your fund manager or by selecting Lifting Up Westchester in your grantmaking portal. You can also make recurring grants from your DAF to help sustain our mission.
Multi-Year Gifts: Your 3–5-year commitment to Lifting Up Westchester ensures that we can consistently provide life-changing support to those who need it most. By pledging over multiple years, you’re not just making a gift – you’re providing us with a reliable income stream that allows us to confidently plan for the future. This stability enables us to invest in long-term programs, adapt to changing needs, and ultimately have a greater impact on those we serve.
Charitable Gift Annuity: When you sign an annuity agreement with Lifting Up Westchester, you make a lump sum donation and take a partial tax deduction. Once the lump sum is invested, you (or the person you choose) receive payments on a fixed schedule per terms of the agreement. After the recipient's lifetime, LUW receives the balance of the invested funds.
Planned Giving
Beneficiary Designations: You can name Lifting Up Westchester as a beneficiary of your bank accounts, investment accounts, life insurance policy, Donor-Advised Fund (DAF), and retirement assets (IRA, Roth IRA, 401(k), 403(b), and other pension plans). Beneficiary designation forms – available from the institutions where you have your accounts – pass those assets directly to the beneficiaries you name.
Charitable Bequests: In the estate planning process, you can designate Lifting Up Westchester to receive a portion of your assets in a will. This type of planned giving is called a bequest. When you give through a bequest, you leave a lasting legacy.
Legacies That Lift
The Wiggins Legacy Society honors individuals who have made sustaining gifts to Lifting Up Westchester. It is named in memory of Barbara and Charles Wiggins who were active members of the White Plains community, avid supporters of LUW, and deeply committed to making society more just and equitable for everyone. Their legacy is one of love for humankind and the hope that, together, we can make the world a better place.
The Wiggins Legacy Society is an opportunity to express our gratitude for all that you will make possible through your remarkable generosity. It provides donors with a meaningful way to leave a lasting impact, connect more deeply with our mission, and inspire others to give. Individual donors who make a commitment totaling $50,000 or more (single gift or multi-year pledge) are invited to join.
